Why Review Books We Read? I Like Reviewer Kevin Nenstiel's Answer

Kevin NenstielWhen Kevin Nenstiel requested a copy of Blinded by Progress to review, I quickly checked out his blog and discovered that he loved books and taught English at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, NE. I smiled, because I lived in the Cornhusker State for 16 years and visited Kearney several times. Not that I had any intention of not sending a review copy, but I did so with all the more interest when I learned of this connection. This morning I learned that Nenstiel had posted his review on Wordbasket, his blog.

You May Have Boycotted; But Have You Joycotted?

Ysmay WalshJoycotting comes from the entrepreneurial experience and spirit of Ismay Walsh who developed her first website at age 10 and began college at 12. She focuses on helping people make positive sustainable changes in their lives and intentionally welcomes spiritual impacts into her own.
Her blogging includes “Written Word Wednesday” entries of interviews with authors about their books. I’m delighted that the conversation Ismay and I had about my book, Blinded by Progress, is now on her blog. We had, as she says, a “wonderful interview.”

OneEarth Living Takes Us on the Adventure of Personal Growth

Greg VoisenToday, the conversation Greg Voisen and I had about my book “Blinded by Progress” posted as podcast number 436 on Inside Personal Growth. That number lets you know that Greg has been in conversation with a lot of authors about a lot of different topics of personal growth.Listen to our conversation and you’ll quickly sense that Greg’s understands personal growth to be a vast terrain, and that he explores it with authors because he believes we humans have greater capacities for positive participation in our planet’s processes than we have yet used.

The "American Dream" Needs a Major Makeover

The makeover of our national mythology that Earth is writing doesn’t talk about us as consumers but as spiritual beings who behave most wisely when we feel awe in the presence of her evolutionary mysteries. We are wisest, her dreams says, when we study the flowers, trees, microbes, marine life, and insects for how to do economics. There we see radical interconnectedness instead of competitive advantage and unending growth. But don’t wait for someone else to transform the American Dream to a compelling, useful mythology for the 21st century. Ponder your personal mythology as Question 5, page 27, in Blinded by Progress asks you to do. Get your own mythology to contrast strongly with the American Dream of the past and speak up in solidarity with Earth. It’s the Earth Dream, not the past American Dream, that we want to drive our lives is it not?

Two Tools So We Can Have Conversation about "Blinded by Progress"

“What stirs in you when you read Blinded by Progress? Where do you say ‘Yes!’ and where do you say ‘No!’ or ‘Perhaps.’” More than writing a book, I want to be in a conversation with you and with others. The best tools to get us there are available; they need YOU to use them. Tool #1 is a review. Tool #2 is an online discussion. Both tools need you to use them. Otherwise they just lie there doing nothing. But use them, and they spring to life with your energy and ideas.

Think Like a Gorilla: Civilization Is Not Such a Great Project Really

It’s not as if civilization just happened to us humans! We have been shaping it for 12,000 years—ever since the glacial ice receded and the climate stabilized. That’s a long time until we compare it to the 200,000 years that we humans have been on the planet. Which begs us to ask: what was happening those other 180,000 years and why did we humans feel a need to civilize it?

Measure Change in 2014 by These 5 Practices

Whether Republicans or Democrats win the House and Senate in 2014 has importance. So does whether media can facilitate civil debate between progressives and conservatives so that understanding and cooperation can be produced from diversity. Yet, whatever changes in these arenas happen in 2014, their impact matters little unless we take big steps that change the following 5 Big Practices.
