Undergo Ecological Conversion, Pope Francis Urges

With what language can we urge one another to go further on the ecological heroic journey to OneEarth living? Pope Francis searches for such language toward the end of his encyclical, Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home. Pope Francis expresses great concern that despite all that is being done, the dangerous trends in air, soils, water, and climate are not reversing. Slowing the trends is not enough; they must be reversed.

Nature: A School with Great Teachers, Multiple Names, One Story

What a school Nature provides! We can tune in or not, but she’s ever teaching and learning—a living school with dynamic interactivity all the time. It can just as well be called the Wilderness School or the Creation School. Each name has merit. Though we often use these words interchangeably, each emphasizes certain qualities. All overlap. Even when we put them all together, they do not describe fully the rich synergy of this school.

From Egos to Eden

The Tree of Life by Hannah Cohoon, 1854How do you like the title of this blog as a title for a book? It’s what I’m planning to call my second book … unless I get a wave of comments telling me it just doesn’t work. The book isn’t likely to be published ‘til the end of the year, so you have time to weigh in.

Words for a subtitle haven’t settled in for me yet. But maybe: “Making the Heroic Journey to OneEarth Living.” The book spells out, chapter by chapter, the Great Work required of us to get beyond ego-thinking into those larger topographies of consciousness where we can act in harmony with Earth.

Eight Stimuli for New Thinking Ecologically

It seemed that every hour I heard something new at the conference entitled, “Seizing an Alternative,” held June 4-7, in Claremont, CA. So many people there seeking ecological living. The main answer to “Why?” this conference went like this. We know we need different policies; but policy-makers aren’t currently acting for Earth’s inhabitable future. Science has been speaking out prophetically in recent years; but too few institutions are moving at the rate science urges. The causes of the crises are accelerating, not diminishing. So the conference said: We need to change our thinking.

Eight Essential Components in a OneEarth Story

In order to learn, teach, and live a OneEarth story we need to move decisions out of the story of human civilization—a 12,000 year long story dominated by gradually intensifying MultiEarth ways which have been pursued as superior. But Earth’s blowback on that story now exposes it as the product of a consciousness that is less than we humans were evolved to live. A New Story, which really means we’re updating our understanding of Earth’s old, unfolding story, calls on a fuller range of the capacities of our minds and greater Self. When we shift our identities from ego-consciousness to the consciousness of our greater Self, we are able to move beyond dualisms, competitions, and imperialisms that bedevil civilization, and into a holism in which we are interdependent with all of creation.

Interview with Progressive Radio Host Rob Kall, Philadelphia, Now Posted

Rob KallA quick look at the topics and interviews Rob Kall does on his weekly Bottom Up Radio Show reveals his interest in all things that are changing the world. Consider the example of printing a car with 3-D printing (it’s already happening); or his interview with Fritjof Capra on how systems thinking that’s rooted in life sciences is replacing civilization’s inaccurate mechanistic thinking. The mechanistic model has been in use over the past couple of centuries. In April, Rob called me one morning, around 11 o’clock, and asked me to be on his show later that day. It’d been over a year since he’d asked me for a review copy of my book, Blinded by Progress. With the lapse of time, I no longer expected to hear from him. But, happily, I was wrong!

Pando Populus: Challenging Industrial Assumptions with Ecological Alternatives

I’m conference-weary… and wary. But I’m not about to miss Pando Populus, June 4-7. Maybe I’ll see you there. First of all there’s the name—Pando Populus! I said, “What?” But when I read about it, I thought, “Very clever! What a wonderful ecological symbol for how our species needs to live!” It was chosen for this conference because it is the oldest (80,000 yrs) and largest (100 acres) living organism on the planet. It appears to be a vast grove of individual aspen trees above ground. But underground it’s a vast, integrated system of life. Get the symbolism? Whereas industrial civilization puts us all into 7 billion separate units, in an ecological way of arranging society we are interconnected with all of Nature like Pando Populus. We’ll rethink how to live from an ecological perspective. And that really excites me!
